Mission Statement:

To promote the restoration of our beaches, dunes, and salt marsh, and the protection of them from

further erosion in order to preserve the natural beauty of our shoreline and historic town, districts,

and boardwalk; to promote a balance of public access to the beaches and the conservation of their

natural habitat; to ensure the long term stabilization of our beaches so they can be enjoyed for

generations to come.”

*** Goal for the September and succeeding meetings: “Bring a Friend to the Meeting”

July meeting minutes approved: - Unanimous

Treasurer’s Report: No treasurer’s report but we had $2768.54 in our account in May.

General Discussion:

Next Meeting: Set for 9/8/14

1: Most of this meeting was a discussion with Matt Terry a candidate for State representative from our

district. Matt is a Sandwich resident and is very committed to finding a solution to the dune and beach

erosion issue. He feels that Sandwich needs a full-time representative working solely for our Town’s

interests.

2: Also present was Susan James, Sandwich Town Selectman.  There was a long discussion of Sandwich

finances, beach funding possibilities and the need for action.

3: As part of that Susan brought up “Investment Fund Accounts” as a possible method of putting money

aside for beach and dune restoration. An account of this type would not need yearly approval and could

grow as any other investment account would.

4: Peter Revella - Irene Davis and Bill Boles filled our guests in on Peter’s Skype-in discussion at our last

meeting. The committee was favorably impressed with his presentation and hopes that the Town will

choose to meet with him for a discussion.

5: Recent News – It appears that Sandwich will not have to file a mandatory environmental impact

report on the beach/dune restoration projects. The State Secretary for Energy and Environmental Affairs

has reportedly decided that an expanded Environmental Notification Form will suffice. Sandwich should

have all of its needed permits in line by the end of the 2014.

6: A discussion of property taxes and development ensued. Matt Terry mentioned that in his door to

door canvasing of the town that the number one issue is high taxes and that about ¼ of the people he

talks to are thinking of moving. Susan James explained the difference between the tax rate and property

taxes. Taxes being the total monies collected to run the town, while the tax rate is based on the total of

the town’s property value.

7: Bill Burbank mentioned the plan to turn Sandwich into a Recreation Destination.  A discussion

followed of the implications of that and its possible effect on the Town’s tax base.

8: 375th Parade - Irene will contact LauraWing to see if our participation is still a go.

9: Meeting adjourned 8:05 PM.

Continuing Action Items:

● Check on t-shirts both inventory and colors.

* Work to get the beaches survey onto the town’s website.

● Send letters out to the town.

● Irene to interview more people on Sandwich TV.

● Plan for the 375th anniversary of our town.

● See if we can participate in Gustavius Howland Day.

● Identify a lawyer to represent us.

● Find out more about filing a class action suit
