Mission Statement:

“To promote the restoration of our beaches, dunes, and salt marsh, and the

protection of them from further erosion in order to preserve the natural

beauty of our shoreline and historic town, districts, and boardwalk; to

promote a balance of public access to the beaches and the conservation of

their natural habitat; to ensure the long term stabilization of our beaches so

they can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

*** Goal for the October and succeeding meetings: “Bring a Friend to the

August meeting minutes approved: - Unanimous

Treasurer’s Report: No treasurer’s report but we had $2768.54 in our

account in May.

General Discussion:

  • Bill B filled the group in on the latest developments regarding Sandwich’s grant applications. (As Laura was delayed by a meeting of the Sandwich Community Preservation committee we departed from the published agenda.)
  • Brian Herr, republican candidate for the US Senate introduced himself and gave a brief description of what he’d like to accomplish if he’s elected. The committee asked Brian what he would do about the continuing erosion issue if elected and what he would recommend that TSB do now. Brian responded that this was an issue that was not too costly, 10 million dollars being a drop in the bucket when considered against the Federal budget. He suggested that we get political, run a candidate for selectman next time around. He suggested that we contact all existing candidates in the current election cycle and ask them where they stood on the beach/dune re-nourishment issue. He also said that he would work on this problem if elected. Sense of the Committee: We decided to take Brian’s advice and poll all relevant candidates before the November election.
  • Walter Sullivan brought up the idea of a sand “barter” or sand exchange as a possible method to get sand onto our beaches and dunes. The way this would work, sand mined would be filtered and the compatible sand would be applied to the beached and dunes in return for getting ownership of the remaining sand. Alter suggests that we have a meeting with interested parties to discuss this.
  • TSB Forum:  We decided that one of the topics at our upcoming forum should be an analysis of what the loss of beach front properties would mean for the tax rate of all of Sandwich’s tax payers. Further, we decided to project what will happen as coastal property values diminish due to the inability to get a good price for the many beach front properties that are now threatened and on the market.
  • Laura reported on the results, so far, of her beach surveys.  A large number of people responded over the last month. Most are very worried about what is going on, and almost 100% feel that the Federal government is responsible and should fix things. As darkness was falling (we were outside) it was decided to do a fuller analysis of the poll results at our October meeting.
  • TSB Calendar: A motion was made and passed unanimously to create a calendar. The calendar would ‘start’ around next June and run through the end of 2015. It would be picture dense, showing before and current pictures of our beaches and dunes wherever possible. This will be discussed further at our next meeting.
  • Class Action Suit: It was decided to explore a class action suit to force action. More discussion at our next meeting.
  • Meeting Adjourned: 7:40.

Next Meeting: Set for 10/13/14

Continuing Action Items:

● Plan for upcoming Craft Fair
